TOM PETTIS

Tom is a British painter who has recently undertaken an artist residency at Beaulieu's Palace House, in the New Forest. His practice is often quite conceptual, taking much inspiration and direction from philosophical texts, which has led him toward the theme of ‘the human condition’. His medium of choice is egg tempera, an older method of working which allows him to slowly build up a painting in small marks, layer by layer, over a long period of time. These works were all created over the last year during lockdown. By focusing on an isolated figure in a fresh environment, he aimed to capture a meditative melancholy, nostalgia, and hopefulness in order to bring about a sense of calm, in an otherwise anxious time.
