LEON G VARGA

Leon Varga was born in Hungary and has a working class, atheist background which was at all times marked by an internal diaspora. This made it difficult for him to feel rooted and he found it hard to accept certain traditions and moral practices other than those ordered by cultural expectations. For this reason, he grew up under the spell of Goulash Communism. The 'visual' (as an experience) has been a crucial part of his upbringing. Acceptance of history, the people and his family, acknowledgment of the cultural traditions in which he was raised, a profound love of the desire for freedom and the creativity of mankind; are the foundations of his practice. He spent many years preparation to become an artist by studying: history, mythology, neuroscience, socio psychology, poetry, architecture and large sections of religious studies.

Leon’s main interest is centred on those products of the visual of socialist imagery ' from photography to film, video and multimedia ' as they intertwine with the visual production of what is still considered 'Eastern European culture'. He is interested in the analysis of these visual products from the perspective of gender, religion, class and other practices at work in the global stage as part of Cultural Study and wants to discover how it determines cultural paradigms in post-socialist societies.
