KATIE BENNETT-RICE
Katie Bennett-Rice is an artist living and working in Leeds, and graduated from Art and Design at The University of Leeds in 2019. Her work explores the small details of nature we often miss or overlook in our daily lives, inspired by the natural ‘clues’ like feathers or seaweed that hint at the abundance of wildlife hidden from view within Leeds and coastal West Yorkshire. Bennett-Rice transforms these small moments into large scale scenes exposing as much detail as possible, inviting her audience to slow down and readily observe the nature around them no matter how common, small or ugly. Working in fine pen, Bennett-Rice captures the intricacy of complex ecosystems whilst referencing other worldly fold out illustrations from children’s books. Observing nature with the childlike imagination we lose in adulthood, she pays equal attention to all in the scene from a rotting branch to a scenic view.
