ANASTASIS

ARTISTS: Court Spencer and Bob Birch
CURATOR: Court Spencer
DATE: April 2017
VENUE: Left Bank Leeds

This immersive installation was a celebration of spring and the cycles of life. It was made up of over 2,500 seedlings, including snap peas, beetroot, purple dwarf beans, sweetcorn, sunflowers and chives. It opened for Easter, with guided reflections and closed on Earth Day when audiences were invited to take the seedlings home.

Anastasis is the ancient Greek word for resurrection, carrying with it a sense of rising and recovery. The seedlings were laid out in concentric circles to represent life cycles, the changing seasons and the abundance of nature. These themes were reiterated within the accompanying soundscape by Bob Birch that captures the dawn chorus of a spring day.

Visitors were invited to spend time at the installation, walk through it, sit with it and take time to reflect.
